Let's look at a scenario. I've dealt with this exact scenario multiple times throughout my career. You have an employee who normally is an average performer. Does his job satisfactorily, shows up on time. Recently he's had a habit of showing up late. How do we manage this employee?
Do we "three strikes and you're out"?
Do we start assigning points?
Maybe, he needs to go on a performance improvement plan?
Quite often, we tend to lead with the needs of the business rather than the needs of our people. In this scenario, I've come across many different reasons throughout my career. However, instead of leading with chastisement, the conversation always began with "Is everything ok? I've noticed you've been showing up late more frequently".
Sometimes, it's family issues. Other times, it's that they're staying up late because of night classes. Sometimes it may be due to child care issues. One time (I kid you not) it was that he didn't own an alarm clock. In this instance it presented an opportunity for a funny gift of a brand new alarm clock, complete with wrapping paper and bow. In all of these cases, I made an effort to adjust where I could to meet the needs of my team, and my business. I didn't lead with a stern talking to, or performance management... I led with kindness.
This small shift can have astonishing impact in morale, loyalty, rapport, and a desire to achieve.

We never know what someone is going through. If all we see is the symptom, and we only ever address the symptoms, it does nothing to get to the root cause. Talking to, and expressing concern for your reports will go miles towards building a strong and effective leadership style, and a strong, effective, high performing team. As a leader, it is our job to serve our employees... Serve them with tools and resources to allow them to perform their best. Is that tool shifting their schedule, a mental health day, or simply a little grace. We should all strive to lead with kindness every day. You may be surprised at the changes it can bring.
